Why do I have to "accept cookies" to use Library resources online?

I'm worried about security of my computer.

The authentication system and many of our resources use cookies to keep track of your session as you search and view articles and data. If you are very concerned about security of your computer, keep a browser with low security (allows cookies) for library research, and use another browser with tighter settings for web surfing and email.
